How to Judge TMT Bar Quality on Site: No Lab Needed

Six field checks that tell you more about a TMT bar than any brochure: ribs, the bend test, bar embossing, weight per metre, rust versus mill scale, and rerolled-bar red flags.

Start With the Ribs: They Are the Bar's Grip

A TMT bar does its work only if concrete can hold on to it. That grip comes from the ribs: the raised pattern rolled onto the surface. The slanted transverse ribs running across the bar lock into the concrete; the longitudinal ribs run along the length. Together they are what makes it a deformed bar, and bond strength is the whole point of them.

On a good bar, the ribs are sharp, evenly spaced, and the same height from one end to the other. Pull three or four bars from different parts of the bundle and lay them side by side. The pattern should match bar to bar.

Now the red flags. Ribs worn flat in patches point to worn rolls or rerolled stock. Spacing that wanders, tight here, loose there, is a rolling-control problem. And if two bars in the same bundle carry visibly different rib patterns, someone has mixed material. Walk away from that bundle.

The Field Bend Test: Five Minutes, No Machine

IS 1786 prescribes proper bend and rebend tests on a mandrel in a lab. You cannot replicate that exactly on site, but a field version tells you plenty. Treat everything below as a rule of thumb, not a code test.

Take a full bar of 8 mm or 10 mm. Slip a GI pipe over one end for leverage and bend the bar slowly around a firm round former: another pipe of roughly three to four times the bar diameter works well. Go past 90 degrees, then look closely at the outer face of the bend.

  • Good TMT bends smoothly and shows no cracks, splits, or flaking on the outer surface of the bend.
  • Fine hairline cracks on the outside of the bend mean poor ductility. Reject.
  • A bar that snaps, or kinks suddenly instead of curving, is brittle steel, often rerolled material.
  • Rebend check: straighten the bent portion partway back. Good steel takes this too without surface cracks.

Read the Bar Like a Label

Every genuine TMT bar carries embossing rolled into the surface: the brand name or logo and the grade: Fe 500, Fe 500D, Fe 550D, and so on. Many mills roll the size onto the bar as well. Fe 500 means a yield strength of 500 N/mm²; the D suffix means higher ductility, which is what you want in seismic zones and, frankly, in any building you care about.

Check three things. First, the embossing should be crisp and repeat at regular intervals down the bar. Shallow, smudged, or one-off embossing is a bad sign. Second, the brand name should be spelt exactly right; the trade is full of lookalike names one letter away from a known brand. Third, the grade must be on the bar itself, not only on the tag.

Then match the bar to the paperwork. The bundle tag and your invoice should carry the same brand, grade, and size, and an ISI-marked bar is made under a BIS licence number you are entitled to ask the dealer to show. A dealer who hesitates over paperwork is telling you something too.

Weight Per Metre: The Scale Settles Arguments

Steel is sold by weight, so an undersized bar cheats you twice: you pay in rupees for metal you never receive, and the bar is weaker than the design assumes. The check costs nothing but a measuring tape and a weighing scale.

The nominal weight comes from a simple formula: diameter squared, divided by 162, gives kilograms per metre. So 8 mm is 0.395 kg/m, 10 mm is 0.617, 12 mm is 0.888, 16 mm is 1.580, 20 mm is 2.470, and 25 mm is 3.858.

IS 1786 allows a tolerance on a weighed batch: plus-minus 7 per cent for sizes up to and including 10 mm, 5 per cent for above 10 mm up to 16 mm, and 3 per cent above 16 mm. Mark exactly one metre, weigh three or four bars from different bundles, and take the average. A 12 mm lot averaging below about 0.84 kg/m is outside tolerance. Raise it with the dealer before unloading, not after the truck has left.

Rust Versus Mill Scale: Know What Is Harmless

Fresh bars carry mill scale: a tight, dark bluish-grey skin formed during hot rolling. It is normal and nothing to argue about. Likewise, a light golden-brown film of surface rust from a few weeks in the open, especially through the monsoon, does no harm.

The wipe test: rub the bar with a dry cloth or a wire brush. If the rust comes off and the metal underneath is smooth and sound, the bar is fine to use.

What you should not accept is flaky, layered rust that comes off in scabs, or pitting: small craters you can catch with a fingernail. Pitting means the section is already losing metal, and the weight-per-metre check will usually confirm it. Store bars off the ground on wooden sleepers, keep them covered, and this problem rarely arises at all.

What a Fake or Rerolled Bar Looks Like

Rerolled bars are made by reheating scrap such as old plates and ship-breaking steel, and rolling it into bar shape without the controlled quenching and tempering that gives real TMT its combination of strength and bendability. They are sold cheap and they fail cheap. The signs are usually visible if you look:

One more sign worth knowing: a proper TMT bar has a hardened outer ring and a softer core. On a cleanly cut and polished end, that ring shows up as a darker band after etching. It is a shop test rather than a site test, but for a big purchase in doubt, it is worth asking a lab or the dealer's depot to demonstrate it.

The safest habit costs nothing. Buy from an authorised dealer, insist the grade appears on both the bar and the invoice, and run the bend test and the weight check on delivery, while the truck is still standing at the gate. Ten minutes there saves months of worry inside the slab.

Quick questions

Is light rust on TMT bars a reason to reject a delivery?

No. A thin brown film that wipes or brushes off, leaving smooth metal underneath, is harmless and normal after open storage. Reject only when the rust is flaky and layered, or when you can feel pitting with a fingernail, and confirm the doubt with a weight-per-metre check.

Can I tell Fe 500 from Fe 500D on site?

Only from the embossing and the paperwork. Actual strength and elongation need a lab. So make the marking non-negotiable: the grade must be rolled onto the bar and printed on the invoice. The field bend test then gives you a rough confidence check on ductility, as a rule of thumb.

My 12 mm bars weigh 0.86 kg/m. Should I worry?

Nominal is 0.888 kg/m, and IS 1786 allows plus-minus 5 per cent on a batch for this size: roughly 0.844 to 0.932 kg/m. At 0.86 you are inside tolerance but on the lighter side, so weigh a few more bars from different bundles before you sign the challan.
